The Question of Pain and Suffering
Series John - "That Ye Might Believe"
Anyone who has experienced personal pain and suffering has asked the question, "If God is all good and all powerful, why is there pain and suffering in the world"? Jesus' disciples (and probably many others) believed that personal suffering was a result of personal sin in someone's life. However here in John chapter 9, Jesus reveals that suffering is not necessarily a result of individual sin in one's life, but an opportunity for God to display His glory and power! Jesus' response—neither this man nor his parents sinned—challenges the common assumption that pain and suffering is always punishment. Christ points witnesses to a deeper purpose: that God's works are made manifest through human weakness. The passage emphasizes that God sees, cares, and actively works in suffering, even when His methods are mysterious, as seen in Jesus' physical act of making clay and anointing the man's eyes, symbolizing divine condescension and intimate involvement. Obedience to God's commands, even when the purpose is unclear, is essential, and the ultimate hope lies in future deliverance through resurrection and the eternal fulfillment of God's grace, which sustains believers in the present while they await complete restoration.
