Paragraphs 12 and 13
Series The LBCF of 1689 - Chapter 26
Resolving Conflicts in the Church:
One very important reason for the Biblical mandate of church membership is the structure of true discipline in a New Testament church. (Paragraph 12) Conflict in a completely organized New Testament Church is unavoidable, and there are clear instructions in the Scriptures for their resolution. We must first distinguish between mere annoyances that naturally arise - from true offenses, and again we must distinguish between true offenses and excommunicable or criminal acts. The first are to be covered with love, the second are to be resolved with the New Testament's progressive instructions, the third call for the machinery of excommunication or even the Civil Magistrate. In every case, one must seek the good of his fellow and the reputation of the Church, in the spirit of restoration, recognizing the example and authority of the Head of the Church. The Lord calls us to be kind and forbearing to our enemies - how much more toward our brethren?
