From Emptiness to Hope. Ruth 1:6-22
Series Ruth
Sermon | Ruth 1:6-22 | Sunday Evening Service, March 08, 2026.
Preacher: Pastor Rocky Stevenson
In Ruth 1:6–22, the story begins to turn from tragedy toward hope. After famine, loss, and deep sorrow, Naomi hears that Yahweh has "visited His people" and given them food (Ruth 1:6). That small piece of news becomes the beginning of a journey back to Bethlehem—and the beginning of God's restoring work.
This sermon traces three key movements in the passage. First, Naomi hears of God's mercy and chooses to return to the land of promise. Second, Ruth makes one of the most remarkable declarations of loyalty and faith in Scripture: "Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God" (Ruth 1:16). In that moment, a Moabite widow publicly commits herself to Yahweh and to His covenant people. Finally, Naomi returns to Bethlehem in bitterness, renaming herself "Mara," yet the narrator quietly reveals that they arrive at the very beginning of the barley harvest—an early hint that God is already turning emptiness toward restoration.
This passage shows how God works through ordinary decisions, loyal love, and unexpected people to accomplish His purposes. Even when life feels bitter and broken, the Lord is often already at work, preparing redemption.
Listen as we explore how Ruth's commitment, Naomi's return, and God's providence point us toward the hope of restoration.
