The Eternal Day of Rest
Series The Book of Genesis
The sermon teaches that God's rest on the seventh day marks the completion of creation and foreshadows the greater spiritual rest fulfilled in Christ. God did not rest from exhaustion but ceased from His creative work, blessing and sanctifying the seventh day as a unique and holy time that points beyond itself to God's redemptive plan. The sermon explains that the Sabbath given later at Sinai was not a universal creation mandate but the covenant sign of the Mosaic covenant with Israel, and over time human traditions distorted its meaning. Jesus revealed the true purpose of the Sabbath and ultimately fulfilled it through His finished work on the cross, providing the true rest that believers enter by faith. Because the Sabbath was a shadow pointing to Christ, Christians are not bound to observe the Saturday Sabbath; instead, the church gathers on the Lord's Day to worship the risen Christ while enjoying the spiritual rest He accomplished. The message concludes that the seventh day of Genesis ultimately points to the eternal, unending rest believers receive through Jesus—the Lord of the Sabbath—both now in salvation and fully in the age to come.
