The LBCF of 1689 - Ch 7, Para 1, Part 3
Series The LBCF of 1689 - Chapter 7
Proposition 3. God has instituted and sealed His gracious overture to Man by way of a sworn promise: God's Covenant with Men
o The Covenant of Works Defined.
o The Covenant of Grace Defined.
Both are aimed at the same goal.
Both require the same thing.
Both are perpetual, both are at work today.
Two observations:
1. We ought never think the covenant of works to be a relic of ancient human history.
2. The better we understand God's eternal covenants of works and grace, the better we shall be guarded from religious errors. What errors?
o Dispensationalism
o Antinomianism
o Arminianism
The Four Doctrines of our understanding so far…
1. God's covenants with Man are but two:
o The Covenant of Works
o The Covenant of Grace
2. This Covenant of Grace is progressively revealed.
3. These Historical Covenants serve to illustrate God's saving purpose with examples
4. The Covenant of Grace is one consistent entity, characterized by One Purpose, One People, One Redemption.
