After the disciples confess a firm faith in Christ, he begins to more openly speak of his coming passion. Jesus shows us that we must mirror him in his willingness to give of himself. The cross that we must take up is not a metaphor for a hard life, but rather Jesus is essentially saying "I want you to be willing to be a martyr."
