The Child of God and Sin

Idea: Boice, “Sin has no place in the Christian life.” Therefore pursue righteousness.

Intro: John has started on the subject of the life of righteousness. At this point he takes up the three tests that he gave earlier. How can you know that you are a Christian? John gives three tests; the tests of righteousness, love, and truth. One by one John revisits them and contrasts them with their opposite. So he'll set out the contrast of righteousness and sin, then love and hate, then truth and error.
