Kinsman-Redeemer

In Ruth 3, Naomi wants to see her daughter-in-law at rest, secure in a new home with a new husband, "settled in life" (Moffatt). To accomplish that goal, Naomi presents Ruth with a plan, a controversial plan that raises questions in the minds of readers both ancient and modern. Naomi's plan strikes us as a bit bizarre, dangerous, and perhaps even immoral. In essence, it calls for Ruth to go to Boaz at night while he's camping out guarding a pile of grain and get him to marry her. Does that sound like a good plan to you? Whatever you think, does it serve the purposes of God?
