Christian Liberty Part 6
Series Christian Liberty
Dealing with Liberty
First, the meat is different. In 1 Corinthians 8-10, the meat is meat which had been offered to idols.
The second main difference is the weaker brother. In Romans 14-15, the weaker brother is simply “offended” at the freedom of the stronger believer.
One of the loudest objections that I have heard about limiting one’s liberty by considering the weaker brother is the following: If I do that, then I will be led about by the whims of the consciences of judgmental believers.
Principle 2: The Principle of Promotion 9:1-23
What can we learn from what we just read? Thoughts?
We must be willing to sacrifice personal rights in order to promote the gospel. We must keep the gospel in mind
The Sacrifice of Paul #1 1 Cor 9:1-19
Paul defends his own position as an apostle (1-6)
After defending his position as an apostle, Paul declares his own rights, specifically his right to receive financial support for his apostolic labors. In this declaration, he uses illustrations from both the culture and the Scriptures.
A Cultural Defense (7)
A Scriptural Defense (8-13)
An Authoritative Demand (14)
In Verse 15 he says “it were better for me to die”
In verse 16 he says that he is under necessity.
Then in verse 18, he says that he would make “the gospel without charge”
Finally, in verse 19, Paul says that he had made himself (he had enslaved himself) a servant to all
