The Foundation of the Golden Rule

The only foundation for ethics is God himself. Murder is wrong because it is contrary to God's nature. Stealing is wrong because it is contrary to who God is. But confidence in God's sovereignty and kindess does more than give us the basis for understanding what is right and what is wrong. Because God is sovereign and because he loves us and answers our prayers, we are able to follow the Golden Rule without fear. We can practice the ethics of the Lord Jesus that are the ethics of transparency and vulnerability, because God is sovereign and because he delights in hearing and answering our prayers. We can do what is right, pray and then leave the results in the hands of our kind and loving Sovereign.
