“Save Yourself”: Jesus Mocked on the Cross, the Two Thieves, and the Kindness That Le
Series The Gospel of Luke
Jesus is hanging on the cross, praying, "Father, forgive them," while nearly everyone around Him is mocking, testing, and daring Him to "save Yourself" (Luke 23:35–41). In this exposition, we see the irony of their words, why Jesus refused to save Himself so He could save us, and how the inscription above His head declares the truth: Jesus is King. We also contrast the two criminals—one demanding relief, the other fearing God, confessing sin, and defending Christ—showing that saving faith has evidence. Finally, we consider how Christ's mercy and kindness lead sinners to repentance, giving hope that even the worst can be forgiven.
