John: Jesus' First Sign
Series Gospel according to John
Turning water into wine - a story that has often been ridiculed by atheists, but it teaches us a great deal about Jesus and what it means to follow him. Up till this point the gospel writer has been emphasising Jesus' deity. Here he shows his humanity - his participation (and help) in a most human situation. It said a great deal about him ('his glory') - such as his generosity, power, and covering of other people's failures. It showed he was someone very special, even though his disciples did not fully understand how special, and it led them to believe in him. We have a greater sign of Jesus' glory - his resurrection - and we too should believe in him. That implies confidence in him and in his words; love and trust, and accepting both his rebukes and his comfort. As we read the gospels we see how the disciples' faith in him grew. We should think about our own experience - do we have faith in him? and is it growing?
