Why Communion Matters
Series Communion
The Lord's Supper is a sacred memorial that simultaneously looks back to Christ's sacrificial death and forward to His future return, fulfilling the Old Testament Passover as the ultimate redemption from sin and inaugurating the consummation of God's redemptive plan in the marriage supper of the Lamb. Far from a mere ritual, it proclaims Christ's atoning sacrifice—where His blood covers sin and imputes His righteousness—while also pointing to the final fulfillment in the kingdom of God, when believers will be glorified and united with Christ as His bride. The passage from Luke 22 reveals Jesus' intentional focus on both the past (the Passover) and the future (the kingdom), emphasizing that His death is the true substance of the shadow, and His return will consummate salvation. Paul's stern warning to the Corinthians underscores the seriousness of approaching communion with self-examination, repentance, and spiritual readiness, as unworthy participation brings judgment, while true believers are called to live in continual obedience, growing in holiness and preparing for Christ's return. Thus, communion is both a declaration of past redemption and a hopeful anticipation of future glory, demanding reverence, personal accountability, and a life aligned with Christ's lordship.
