Joshua 5:1 - The Portent of the Crossing

Main Point: By the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the power of sin and Satan have been defeated and God's people are assured the victory. We can consider this with respect to His Church and with respect to the individual believer.

--FIVE USES/APPLICATIONS--

1. Since sin still remains within us, we ought to take seriously our duty to kill it.
2. Since Christ has defeated the power of sin in us, we ought to fight against sin with a holy boldness and confidence.
3. Since the power of sin and Satan have been defeated, we must consider Heaven to be our present possession.
4. Since Christ has assured the Church's victory, we ought to commit ourselves to her service.
5. Unbeliever: Since Christ has defeated all His enemies, know that He will surely defeat you.

"As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan westward [or toward the sea], and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan [before the faces of the sons of Israel] until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and there was no longer any spirit in them [before the faces of the sons of Israel]."
