James speaks of the world as a philosophy or mindset energized by Satan and appealing to our flesh. 1 John 2.15-17 is a very clear commentary and parallel to James 2.4-6. If we are friend of God, as Abraham was, we will suffer in this world. Friendship with the world is enmity with God across four lines of thought: It is a denial of God's glory, a contempt for God's authority, a betrayal of God's love, and a marginalization of God's presence.
