Burgess Bowling
Another member of the Greatest Generation left us, Burgess Bowling, 96, of Ashland, slipped peacefully into the presence of his Lord Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018. Burgess was born Oct. 16, 1921, in Williamson, W.Va., to the late Cornielus and Cynthia Caines Bowling. In addition to his parents, he was preceding in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Orpha C. Smith Bowling; a son, Burgess Ray Bowling; a granddaughter, Amy Lyn Bennett; a brother, Thurman Bowling; a sister, Lillie Jane Pope; and a son-in-law, Lowell Gene Bennett. He attended Mingo County Schools and married the love of his life, Orpha C. Smith and they shared 62 years together.
Burgess was a WWII combat veteran, coal miner, heavy equipment operator and member of United Mine Workers of America. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He was a beloved father-in-law, uncle and was truly a gentleman. Burgess was a member of DAV Belfry. His hobbies included yard work, gardening, bowling and golf.
The last two years he lived at the Lantern of Morning Pointe in Russell and the family would like to thank the staff for the phenomenal care they have given. Left to cherish his memories are his children, Violet Bennett of Ashland, Danny J. Bowling and wife Brenda of McCarr, daughter-in-law, Carolyn Hager Bowling of Ransom, Linda C. Adkins and husband C.J. of Ashland, William R. Bowling and wife Darlene of McCarr and Fred Bowling, etc.
