Suffering and Salvation. 2 Timothy 4:17-18
Series 1 & 2 Timothy
Sermon | 2 Timothy 4:16-15 | Sunday Evening Service, February 01, 2026.
Preacher: Rocky Stevenson
In 2 Timothy 4:16–18, we hear the steady voice of an aging apostle standing on the brink of death—and speaking with unshakable confidence in God. Paul has been deserted by friends, exposed before Roman power, and left humanly alone. Yet his testimony is not marked by self-pity or despair, but by gospel clarity and worshipful hope.
In this passage, Paul explains why the Lord stood with him and strengthened him: "so that through me the preaching might be fulfilled, and that all the Gentiles might hear" (2 Timothy | 4:17). Suffering, for Paul, is not an interruption to God's purposes but one of His chosen instruments. Chains, trials, and opposition serve the advance of the gospel rather than its defeat.
Paul also lifts our eyes beyond present hardship to lasting hope. The Lord has rescued him before, will preserve him from unfaithfulness now, and will finally bring him safely into His heavenly kingdom. Even execution cannot overturn God's saving purposes. Death itself becomes deliverance.
This sermon calls us to interpret hardship with a mission-shaped mind, to distinguish between suffering for sin and suffering for Christ, and to anchor our endurance in the certainty of final salvation. Whether you are weary in ministry or burdened by affliction, this passage reminds us that the Lord stands with His people, the gospel will not fail, and glory awaits.
