Baptism for the Dead

What does being baptized for the dead mean? While there are many different explanations for this passage, we can be sure of what it does NOT mean, i.e. the Roman Catholic system's interpretation.
What follows is a common sense explanation.

'Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?'
