Polar Opposites
Series Series in Ephesians (2008-10)
Aim: To apply the new man to life's defining moments.
Doctrine: The new man (in Christ) is to overwhelm the impulses of the old man (in Adam). This occurs spontaneously—as we encounter everyday situations. A blessed result accompanies faith-driven obedience.
Exegesis: Three challenging spheres for the new man's dominance: words—which reflect our hearts (v. 25); emotions—which reveal our (real) passions (vv. 26-27); actions—which ultimately expose who we are (v. 28).
Further application: How to succeed in the struggle of polar opposites: first, prepare for the battle, through prayer; then, anticipate the inevitable trial, by faith.
Key verse: v. 25 ''Therefore, putting away lying, 'Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor,' for we are members of one another.''
