The Shepherd's Call
Series Gospel of John
Jesus presents Himself as the true Shepherd in John 10, using a vivid metaphor of a sheepfold to reveal the spiritual reality of His mission and the nature of authentic discipleship. The sheepfold symbolizes the Jewish religious system, which, though outwardly protective, had become a place of exclusion and spiritual blindness, as seen in the casting out of the formerly blind man. The door represents the Law, which only Jesus, as the perfect fulfiller, could enter through, while the doorkeeper is the Holy Spirit, who opens hearts to recognize Christ's voice. The passage emphasizes that true discipleship involves being called by name, following a shepherd who goes ahead of His flock, and being drawn out of systems that cannot save. This divine invitation, rooted in the Holy Spirit's work, calls believers to a life of faith beyond the confines of religious tradition, where the shepherd's voice is unmistakable and His leadership is marked by sacrificial love and personal intimacy.
