In the space of just a few chapters, we find two very similar situations of encounter between David and Saul. Though similarities abound between the two accounts, they certainly are not the same events merely told from two different perspectives. In this narrative, the author relates a narrative of encounter between Saul and David which focuses on demonstrating the growing spiritual maturity of David. Here we find a number of items which point to David's personal growth in grace and godliness. Under four different images of David, the author relates insights about his spiritual development as he charts both David's progress and defends him against unfounded allegations of seeking the kingship by means of violence.
