A Carnal Attempt to Fulfill a Spiritual Promise

Abram, though a man of great faith, was also a man with feet of clay just like us. God had promised him on numerous occasions that He would give him offspring from his own body, but He never specifically mentioned Sarah as the instrument through whom that baby would come. In the words of our text we see the godly couple concocting a carnal scheme ahead of God's timing to bring to fulfillment God's promises. But God's work must be done in God's way, and the Lord has given us this wonderful but sad chapter of Scripture to teach us this very truth.
