Series Seven Sayings from the Cross
I. THE SUN’S DARKENING
A. For three hours the earth was darkened
B. Darkness is representative of misery and adversity; spiritual blindness; sinful works; satanic powers; death; judgment
C. God is light, and when God’s presence and favour is removed, there is only darkness
D. The Light of the World was covered in darkness as He bore our sin
E. The mocking ceased and Christ’s nakedness and humiliation was hidden as God shrouded Him in darkness for those three hours
II. THE SON’S DESOLATION
A. My God, My God
B. Forsaken by the Father
C. He suffered the wrath of God upon the cross
III. THE SINNER’S DELIVERANCE
A. Christ asked the question, “Why?”
B. God’s holiness caused His face to turn away from His sin-bearing Son
C. Christ became our propitiation
D. Christ did not become a sinner, but sin was judiciously imputed to Him
