- We must abide in God and Christ. Our hope and honor are based upon our connection to the Vine. 2) We must obey God in Christ. You cannot obey unless you know what it is you're supposed to be doing. New Testament moral obligations are not just for a particular culture or time. Understand that legalism is adding rules to God's commands and connecting your personal righteousness with obeying your man-made rules. However, obedience and standards are not examples of legalism. The secret of abiding in Christ is found in our obedience - a daily duty and an everlasting end.
