God created us to live by his Spirit, not out of our own flesh. When we become mired with idols, he needs to let us see how sterile this way of life is, but that is not all. He promises to renew his people with an effusion of his Spirit. This is our hope, 'poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Saviour'
