I thirst

Jesus' thirst was physical and spiritual. It showed remarkable spiritual awareness in the midst of suffering, for he was interpreting his experience in the light of Scripture. The lack of pity ("Why have you forsaken me?") was predicted in Psalm 69:20 and he knew the next stage was the drink of sour wine. It showed the grace of self-control, and is an example of faith overcoming feelings. It also showed him controlling events to some extent, and so being active as well as passive in his sufferings.
