Purposes for the Incarnation

Why has Jesus come? The work God had planned for the salvation of man required His Son to become a man to bring it to completion. Jesus Christ identified with mankind by means of the incarnation as He was born on a specific date, at a specific time, and place in the history of mankind.

The letter to the Hebrews emphasizes three distinct purposes for the incarnation and what was accomplished by it. In coming as the God-man, Jesus Christ broke the power of death the devil held over sinful humanity. Jesus Christ, by His substitutionary death, has provided deliverance for all people from the consequence of sin. As the one and only Mediator between God and man, Christ has become the merciful and faithful High Priest for all people.

The accomplishments of Jesus Christ become effective for any and all who will repent of their sin and place their faith in Him alone as their only hope for deliverance from sin's penalty and reconciliation to God.
