The New Covenant Sabbath

The sermon presents the Sabbath as a living, enduring institution within the New Covenant, rooted in creation and fulfilled in Christ, rather than abolished by His coming. Drawing from Hebrews 4, it argues that the ultimate rest promised since creation remains unfulfilled, with Christ as the true rest-giver who has entered His rest, making the weekly Sabbath a foretaste of eternal communion with God. The New Testament does not nullify the Sabbath but reorients it to the first day of the week, the Lord's Day, in celebration of Christ's resurrection and new creation. Objections based on Colossians 2 and similar passages are addressed by distinguishing between the ceremonial Sabbaths of the Mosaic law—now fulfilled—and the enduring principle of weekly worship and rest. Christ's authority as Lord of the Sabbath permits works of necessity and mercy, such as caring for life and serving others, while warning against legalism and neglect of true devotion. Ultimately, the Sabbath is both a sign of ongoing pilgrimage and a joyful anticipation of the final rest, calling believers to delight in God, practice mercy, and persevere in faith until they enter His eternal rest.
