In Times of Crisis: Instinct Over Spirituality

Joseph’s Brothers Return to Egypt
Genesis 43:1-34; Genesis 44:1-34
INTRODUCTION: The famine was sore in all the land and Jacob’s sons had to return to Egypt. Jacob, who was not known for being under subjection to anyone, would now have to meet the demands of his sons. Jacob spent his life deceiving others and could not trust those closest to him—his sons. The last trip was very troublesome, and this trip would also have its share of troubles.

CONCLUSION: The brothers of Joseph returned to Egypt to buy more bread. When they arrived, Joseph had a meal prepared so they could dine together. He gave extra portions to Benjamin as a test of their brothers’ jealousy (Genesis 43:34). He then framed Benjamin to test the brothers’ loyalty and sincerity of love. They passed all of Joseph’s tests and showed that they were ready for reconciliation. Joseph wanted to see his father but could not risk keeping Benjamin if it would cause his father’s death. He must instead reveal himself to his brothers.

P—POINT: The main theme of the lesson
 Joseph obviously tested his brothers concerning their heart toward Benjamin. He was not interested in words, instead he was looking for a change of heart. By the end of this chapter the brothers passed several tests. Oftentimes, the Lord tests us to see what is in our hearts. How well are we doing on the tests?
