5th Commandment: Honor Your Parents

The fifth of the ten commandments, like the fourth, is also positive. The PRECEPT here involves a required attitude of honor, where one respects, reveres and supports those over us. God commands that honor is to be given to our parents, those who are in authority from birth. Then a PROMISE is given to those who obey this command, that includes: (1) longevity of life, "that your days may be prolonged" in both quality ("may be well") and in quantity ("live long"); (2) location in the land - though they were presently at Mount Sinai, they would end up in the land of Canaan in the future; and (3) leadership by Yahweh Himself - His authority guaranteed they would receive the allotment of the land.
