Temple Cleansing
Series John Tobler on Haggai
We remember in the first sermon, Haggai called them to shake off their comforts and begin to build the house again. Remember, they had sat in their boarded-up houses, and he calls them to begin to build again, and they obey. And in our last sermon, we saw that they were discouraged once again from building because the glory of the house seemed as if it was nothing compared to what some of the older men had experienced with Solomon's temple. And they thought, surely it cannot be us, because we were promised the glory of this latter house would exceed abundantly that of Solomon's. But we saw that the glory he was talking about was not merely or at all in terms of the physical temple building, but was looking ahead to the Messiah and what he would bring. He was throwing them off really their carnality and looking for merely you know, pomp and splendor in the building. And so today he throws them off of a similar carnality with regard to how they had approached God and worship and sort of what they thought was happening as they went about their worship in the temple. And this is the construction went on and as the people came in and went out. And so we'll see here in our text, temple cleansing.
