Filled or Forsaken
Series John Tobler on John
Verse 33, then Jesus said to them, I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I go to him who sent me. He's telling them essentially just bear with me a little longer. I'll only trouble you for another six months or so, which is about when Passover was coming. I shall be with you a little longer. And then he again hits them with this enigmatic phrase, these riddles that he's been putting before them, if you will. He was previously talking about his origins. That's what had caught them up. Those were the enigmatic phrases that he gave to them. I am from the Father. He sent me. My doctrine is not my own, but His. But this time, He now looks to the future. I am from Him and sent from Him, and I am going back to Him. I go to Him who sent me. This will be picked up multiple times as we move forward in this gospel account. This is an important phrase. As we'll see here, it is a cause for stumbling. a cause for stumbling here with Jesus' enemies, and will even be a cause of stumbling for his disciples, as you all know. And as we'll see, it's because He is completely out of step with the eschatological hopes of the day. Or better put, they are out of step with God's spiritual kingdom, with the spiritual nature of the kingdom of God that Jesus has already begun to usher in, is ushering in, and will eventually establish.
