The Idol's Last Gasp
Series Series in Acts
Aim: To rejoice to see idols fall, and Jesus glorified.
Doctrine: Idolaters must speak for their mute gods. This is because idols are worthless and so are their makers.
Exegesis: The crazed worship given to dead idols: it feeds off a herd mentality (vv. 28-29); it cannot listen to reason (vv. 30-32); it is insanely committed to bad tradition (vv. 33-34).
Further application: How the true church shuts-up (and down) idols: through faithful gospel preaching of Christ, which knocks down every pretender to God's throne.
Key verse: v. 34 ''But when they recognized that [Alexander] was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, 'Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!' ''
