The Two Mountains (Heb 12:14-29)

Chapter 12 is a chapter about running, teaching us how to run, and urging us to run.

1. Run with endurance, looking to the Son (v. 1-4)
2. Remember the encouragement, addressing us as sons (v. 5-11)

Exposition: When he says, 'Lay aside every hindrance and the sin that so easily entangles,' how should we apply that?

The Four Exhortations

1. 'Pursue peace with all people' (14a)
   See Ps 34:14

2. 'Pursue ... holiness without which no one will see the Lord' (14b)
   Compare v.10, all are disciplined to share in his holiness. Therefore...

3. 'Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled' (v.15)
   See Deut 29:14-21, esp v.18-19.

4. 'Look carefully lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright' (v.16)
   The irony of being like Edom vs. Israel.
