Of the Church (1)

This chapter on the church presents a comprehensive ecclesiology rooted in the sovereignty of Christ, defining the universal church as the assembly of all God's elect—past, present, and future—united under Christ as head. Particular congregations, in contrast, are to be composed of visible saints: living individuals who profess the gospel, live in evangelical obedience, uphold orthodox doctrine, and avoid unrepentant sin. While even the purest local churches are subject to mixture and error, and some may degenerate into spiritual darkness resembling a synagogue of Satan, the Confession affirms that Christ's kingdom endures through history, preserving a faithful remnant until His return. The chapter decisively asserts Christ's supreme and sovereign authority over all church life—its calling, institution, ordering, and governance—rejecting any rival claim, particularly the papacy, which is identified as the Antichrist, a usurper who exalts himself against Christ and violates Christian liberty by imposing unbiblical demands on conscience.
