The Atonement in the Gospel

The gospel Paul had given to the Corinthians had been given to him by Christ Himself. It was the same gospel being proclaimed by the other apostles, but Paul had not gotten from them. This gospel of Jesus Christ was, and is, cross-centered looking back to His substitutionary death on it.

In dying on the cross, Christ became the acceptable sacrifice to God, for all sin, for all time. One all-sufficient payment made on behalf of all people. His substitutionary atonement is the only means by which the penalty for sin could be paid. Only His death was sufficient to satisfy God's wrath against all sin.
Without Christ's death on the cross there is no payment for sin. Without faith in the person & work of Christ there is no forgiveness of sin. Any denial of any of the revealed facts as given in the Bible of the person or work of Jesus Christ results in a faith that will not save. Saving faith begins with the facts and no amount of devotion or good intentions can compensate for the offense of sin against God and the payment due Him.

Being so critical to the base of facts necessary to believe for salvation it has of course been targeted by Satan as a critical truth to be maligned, distorted and mixed in with his lies.

But God has made the pure truth clear on the pages of our Bibles. Additional passages such as Isaiah 53:11-12; Romans 5:6-8; 6:4; Galatians 1:4; 2:20; 3:13; 1 Peter 2:24 confirm for us that 'Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.'
