Wholesome Speech

A common interpretation of this passage is to propose that Paul is warning against "potty talk." Examining the commands of v29 in relationship to the purpose clause in view of the broader context of Scripture reveals that Paul is referring to specific communication situations where God's people need to be exhorted and motivated to fulfill their God-given callings. Warning is sounded as Paul explains that failure to obey God by speaking wholesome words to those who are in need, in these specific communication situations, can lead to grieving the Holy Spirit of God. The application section of this message spells out 4 distinct wholesome words which minister grace to those who are in these specific situations of need: motivate to duty, proclaim the goodness of God's call, remind that victory is of the Lord, and exhort to never rebel.
