The Faith That Is Real

In Matthew 14:34–15:20, we see two pictures of faith—one that seeks Jesus for physical healing and another that is tested by the heart. Crowds rushed to touch even the fringe of His garment, and many were healed. Yet, as the sermon reminds us, healing of the body is temporary, while healing of the soul is eternal. Jesus longs not only to restore our health but to reconcile us to God.

The Pharisees, however, confronted Jesus over ritual hand-washing. Their focus was on traditions, outward rules, and appearances. Jesus rebuked them, declaring that their hearts were far from God though their lips spoke of Him. In clinging to human traditions, they nullified God's commands—especially the command to honor father and mother. True obedience, Jesus said, is not about rituals but about the heart.

Jesus then taught that defilement does not come from what enters the body but from what flows out of the heart. Evil thoughts, slander, immorality, and pride reveal the true sickness within. Outward religion may polish the surface, but it cannot cleanse the soul. Real faith transforms from the inside out.

The message is clear: God desires more than empty religion. He calls us into a living relationship through Christ, one that produces love, joy, and obedience flowing from a renewed heart. Outward traditions can never replace the inward work of grace. Real faith is surrender to Jesus, daily dependence on His Spirit, and the joy of walking in His light.

This is the faith that is real—and the only path to true life.
