#16: Escape, Attack, or Peace?

How do people handle conflict? According to the "Peacemakers" book, three ways: escape, attack, or make peace.

Avoiding conflict is the most common response. But avoidance produces only false peace—treating symptoms instead of the root cause. Scripture repeatedly commands, "Do not fear," reminding us that avoidance often stems from fear and unbelief. True courage, grounded in trust in God's power, presence, and promises, enables believers to confront conflicts righteously. Avoiding conflict betrays unbelief and damages relationships.

Attacking conflict is the opposite error. Rather than seeking reconciliation, attackers aim to win—through force, harsh words, lawsuits, or even violence. Their pride and self-protection destroy peace and relationships.

The third and godly way is to be a peacemaker. Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God." A peacemaker first has peace with God through Christ and then seeks to bring peace to others. Peacemaking may involve overlooking minor offenses, calmly discussing disagreements, seeking counsel, or, when necessary, confrontation and mediation. The goal is restoration, not victory.
