The Discipline Of Temperance

An embrace of true biblical knowledge leads to spiritual growth and usefulness "for the
eternal glory of God, in Christ" – v5 c.f. 3v18. Therefore, sequentially, after the value of
temperance, next is 'the exercise of temperance. Since believers are called to pursue
and be perfected in self-control which they already possess (Gal. 5v22–23), they/we
must be deliberate in the exercise of it. Self-control is by definition: self-mastery. This
self-mastery that is guided and governed by "the true knowledge of Him who called us
by His own glory and excellence – II Pet. 1v3.
