Yesterday, we gave our attention to Jesus’s declaration. As his congregation we are salt and light.
Salt and Drywall
Salt is preservative. It keeps rot and decay from consuming our food. Jesus works in you to preserve your neighbors from the rot and decay of sin and misery. You could think of this in terms of construction. Builders put two layers of drywall between a garage and the main living area. Why? If a fire starts in the garage, then the drywall acts as a retardant. It keeps the flames from the family room. Jesus is making the same point. As his congregation, you are the double sheets of drywall. You keep the fires of sin and misery from spreading.
I saw an example of this in my neighborhood. A young boy, Reece, lost his father. A christian family next door dedicated themselves to walking with Reece and his mother. The fires of loss and loneliness threatened to engulf them. The christian family stopped the flames. They preserved that family.
Light and Lamps
Jesus declared, also, that we are light and that our light will glorify God. Ultimately, Jesus is the light, but he lights us as his lamps. When the world sees your light they ask, “What makes them different?” Under the influence of the Holy Spirit, they say, “I wish I could be apart of that.” A recent convert to Christianity just told me, “A Christian family invited me to a cookout. I couldn’t help noticing how they loved each other.” He continued, “I wanted love like that. So, I spoke to one of the Christians and they told me their love comes from their father in heaven through Jesus. I decided I wanted Him to be my father too.” That young man saw the light of Christ in the light of christian family.
As Christ makes you holy as he is holy, his light is shining through you. People are watching you. Stop and pray that God would use your witness to create an envy or Fomo in them. May our neighbors see your light and glorify our father in heaven by repenting and having faith in Jesus Christ.
Conclusion
I wonder what Jesus has planned for you this week. How will he use you to hold back sin and misery? How will he shine his light through you? Honestly, I am thrilled for you. I cannot think of a more meaningful life than working with Jesus as Herebuilds the world.
