Why are we doing this?
I'm Sam Horn, and I have the wonderful opportunity of pastoring Palmetto Baptist Church. I have been a student of God's Word for many, many years, and so I can confidently say the Word of God has the power to change our lives and to bring us into conformity day by day, and that has been a 40-year journey for me, and I'm so thankful that that journey continues.
And this year, this month, we are beginning a portion of that journey together through the Book of James. And we're going to be doing it in partnership with SermonAudio. And Steven Lee and I have been talking about this now for some time. And so finally, we're doing a study in Spanish through the Book of James. And every Tuesday and Thursday from 10 to 10:45, I'll be here in this room recording a lesson in James in Spanish. And we will be posting the manuscript of that lesson, the study guide, and the student guide for that lesson on SermonAudio's website. and platforms. So I hope you'll join us. We'll begin the second week of February with this.
Today I took some time to think through how would we introduce this, and I think one of the big questions is why would we want to do this in Spanish? Why SermonAudio Español? And part of the answer for that is God's Word needs to be in front of God's people all around the world. SermonAudio has an incredible burden to preserve the Word of God and the teaching of God's Word, not just in its Vaults, but in the hearts of God's people and not just God's English-speaking people. But God's people in every language. Heaven is going to be a place, as we see in John's Revelation, the book of Revelation, a place where every nation, every tribe, every tongue will be gathered together. And I'm so grateful that we have a small opportunity here to partner together to take this precious book of James, to the Spanish-speaking world.
I grew up speaking Spanish. I wish I spoke it better. I'm always going to wish I spoke it better. But I am so thankful that my background and the burden that God has given to me resonated with Steven. And together, SermonAudio and I are going to try to take the book of James and put it in the front of the Spanish-speaking world. And we're just going to leave the results to God. All we know to do is to open up the Bible and let the Word of God loose, and it will run wherever God wants it to run. And so that's our hope.
A Journey through James.
James calls for believers to cultivate and display a living faith in the hard places and dark spaces of the kingdoms of the world where God has assigned them to be salt and light as ambassadors for His Kingdom. This living faith must be wholehearted, single focused, and fully trusting in God and His Word (1:5-8).
This faith is cultivated and strengthened as believers endure the pressure of trials (1:2-4). It is validated before God and others when it acts loyally by resisting the strong allurement of their flesh when faced with temptation (1:13-17).
This faith is the product of the gracious and good gift that God sent down from above – the Word of Truth that brought us forth as first fruits of a coming Kingdom marked by righteousness and governed by Christ Himself (1:18).
This faith displays itself in consistent, humble obedience to the Word (1:19-25), so that the practice of our Faith in Christ is acceptable to God and useful to men (1:26-27).
But what does this faith look like in action? What will it require of faithful kingdom ambassadors as they display the beauty of Christ and proclaim the power of the Gospel to deliver men from darkness and free them from sin’s bondage?
To answer this question, the Holy Spirit inspired James to write one of the first letters in our New Testament to members of his flock who had been scattered throughout the Roman Empire on account of their vibrant faith in Christ! This letter is the Epistle of James!
