“By the Word of the Lord were the heavens made and all the hosts of them by the breath of His mouth.” (Psalm 33:6). God is eternal; before there was a universe, there was God! When He wanted to create, He spoke and His Word made things come into existence that previously did not exist. When God said, “Let there be light,” light came into being. Every time God spoke His divine words on each of the six days of creation, things came into existence. Apart from God’s Word, nothing could come into existence.

When God created man, He communicated with him by His words. God spoke to Adam and told him what to do. For centuries, God communicated to man through the spoken Word. In the time of Moses, God still spoke to men but He had Moses record the words God wanted to have in written form. The first five books in the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy), were written down by Moses. As the Holy Spirit directed Moses, he wrote the Words God wanted recorded. Eventually, God’s words were recorded in sixty-six books of the Bible by approximately forty different authors. God gave man His inspired Word so man could learn who God is, and who man is, and God’s plan of salvation.

Men come into the world alienated from God and unwilling to obey God’s revealed will. All have sinned and gone astray and are under the judgment of God. There is only one way a sinner can escape God’s wrath and that is by believing the gospel. The gospel of Jesus Christ is God’s Word concerning the sinless life of Jesus, His substitutionary death, and His resurrection. Unregenerate man can’t believe the gospel but the Word of God is living and powerful (Hebrews 4:12) and it is the means God uses to bring about faith. “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17). When God wants to save a lost person, He has someone share the gospel with him and the power of the Word penetrates the sinner’s heart and radically changes him. The way God spoke to create the world is the same way He speaks to spiritually dead sinners to create life in them. It’s the Word of God!

The Word of God is not only necessary to save a person but it is necessary to sustain a person who has been saved. The Apostle Peter said in 1 Peter 2:2; “As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the Word that you may grow by it.” The Word of God is the inspired Word that alone can save, sanctify, and feed the hungry soul. How do you view the Bible? How much time do you invest in God’s Word? Begin today to be transformed and strengthened by reading, studying, memorizing, and meditating on the Word of God.

Love in Christ,
Pastor Dennis
