I had truly forgotten about this confession. I love free resources as much as the next person, but have to call out Leon McBeth's 1987 "The Baptist Heritage: Four Centuries of Baptist Witness". I grew up completely Southern Baptist in Tennessee and actually never met a fundamental Baptist person until I was 18 or 19. Somewhere in my mid 20s (I'm mid 50s now), I found the McBeth book of all places on sale cheap at a Christian book outlet store while on vacation (so I instantly doubted it's scholarship, LOL), but quickly realized that it was the real deal and that I did not waste my money. I think it was more my concern about a Calvinist coup in the seminaries training pastors than understanding Fundamentalist origins that finally had me seriously interested in learning about the history of General, Particular, and every other kind of Baptist. My church history exposure before that usually stopped at the Reformation, so it was nice to finally learn my denominational origins and development on our continent.

Heard it from you first (well, ancient topic, but I mean I heard this recent round of discussion in the last few months or so from your podcast first), but it seems to be popping up everywhere. Thank you for this. I always wonder when I hear certain sermons/teachings why the person is giving limited attention or no attention to the historical setting and who was being addressed. What did it mean to the person or people who were the first to hear what was being said or the first to see what had been written?
